About Plebeian

Plebeian is a solo run operation run out of Las Cruces, New Mexico. With a deep desire to create clothes, a love thrashed vintage and informalism work from artist such as Alberto Burri or Antoni Tapies; I was inspired to create something I viewed as analogous. It lead down a very rugged creation process involving slow decomposition, burning, brushing and tearing Fabric. The end result is Ultra Delicate, some splitting with a slight rub of a finger.

I love the look of the scattered holes, I avoid doing needle & thread repairs. Some damage needs repair though, for this first collection I figured to use sterling silver safety pins as support for the torn cloth that moldered away in soil or was heavily burned.

The process of creating a handful of shirts is very slow with decomposition taking time to set in. With lots of downtime and still wanting to create more items, I chose a path of crocheting blankets from the best yarns available, from Loro Piana Cashmere to Hand Dyed Merino. Creating each blanket is very laborious, taking around a month or longer of consistent work. These first few were inspired by WW2 Swiss blankets, more so the idea of their silhouette as well as the construction; these being a more joyful approach to such a utilitarian making.

Following this first collection, It's opened the doors to more unorthodox, iconoclastic ideas for distressing and treating fabric in the near future. I make every garment without haste, meticulously looking over every inch. It would be impossible to perfectly replicate anything I create, for this reason every piece is a 1 of 1.
